What an incredibly beautiful part of the world. Forests and rolling hills stretch to the horizon, dotted with picturesque villages with their characteristic half-timbered houses. Sauerland is all about romance. It’s a place for long walks or bike rides, and when there’s snow, wonderful cross-country skiing. What’s more, downhill skiers and snowboarders can head for Winterberg, the Sauerland winter sports centre, which is just around the corner.
Waldhotel Ohlenbach, a keen and longstanding QL member, is perched on a southern slope with glorious views as far as the eye can see. The cosy hotel has 47 rooms, beautiful gardens and terraces and, last but not least, two swimming pools, both indoor and outdoor, and a sauna.
The hotel is managed enthusiastically by its cheerful owner, Stephan Schneider, who took over the business from his father. Stephan is innovative, constantly adapting the hotel to match contemporary tastes – not just the facilities, but also the cuisine and the bar menu. The latest addition to his successful formula is the hotel’s own beer, brewed with water from its own well, and wryly named with a literal translation of Stephan’s favourite local mountain peak, the Rothaarsteig: ‘Red Hair Mountain’. This craft beer is a huge success, and not to be missed. Fresh, clear and golden. Enjoy!
