An autumn weekend. We travelled to Burghotel-Restaurant Auf Schönburg in Oberwesel (Germany) for a meet & greet with a group of enthusiastic German QL Hoteliers. What a trip, what a hospitality. As soon as you enter the village you see the river Rhine in front of you and the mighty Auf Schönburg Castle on your right hand side. Proud, strategic, like a bird of prey’s nest. Already more than one thousand years. History at its best. 

The mighty Auf Schönburg Castle

The entrance of the walled castle is as impressive as the enormous brick walls. A cobblestone path winds into the heart of the castle: the Auf Schönburg Hotel and Restaurant, owned by the two charming Hüttl brothers, Johann and Hermann. Inside the castle: a warm welcome by the Hütlls, an enormous open fire, a library, a lounge, cosy corners to drink your tea, coffee, a beer, wine or brandy and a devoted, very hospitable staff with lovely waitresses in traditional dirndls. Our suite (the Sieben Jungfrauen Suite) is huge: a bedroom with four poster bed and nice antiques, balcony with Rhine view, a bath as large as an Olympic swimming pool, and a drawing room/study.

Drinks are served in the library, cosy, warm, as a library should be, followed by dinner. Chef Erik Dittmann prepared great dishes with trout tartar as a starter, a salad consommé with ragout of duck, venison with a raspberry vinegar. For those who have a sweet tooth: a dessert with Marzipan and mocha ice cream. And it goes without saying: nice German wines and digestives followed by a nightcap near the open fire: gin & tonics for the diehards!

Great hospitality in good company

8 AM, sunrise, the view is like a fairy tale. The sun tries to peep through the foggy clouds over the Rhine and mountains, which is really spectacular. After a fruitful meeting we walk downhill to Oberwesel. Iris Marx, the Hüttls’ aunt, runs a great restaurant, the Historische Weinwirtschaft with Gutbürgerliche dishes, great wines in a historic building. Just like a museum! After lunch we visited the wine cellars of Weingut Lanius Knab. The vinery of the Lanius family is member of VDP (The Verband deutscher Prädikatsweingüter, the Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates), an elite group of about 200 quality-oriented German vintners committed to terroir-driven viticulture at the highest level. We did a wine tasting tour through the VDP classified Bernstein, Oelsberg and Goldemund vineyards with lots of Riesling and Spätburgunder. A great final of two Auf Schönburg Days!
