Hotel Prinsenhof

The discovery of Groningen

Hotel Prinsenhof

De Prinsenhof was founded in 1436 as a monastery for the Brethren of Common Life. Later it became the residence of stadtholder William Frederick of Nassau-Dietz (1613-1664), before being used as barracks and a military hospital. Centrally located in the shadows of the Martini tower, on the edge of the memorable Martini cemetery, Hotel Prinsenhof offers oak wood parquet floors, the finest bed linen and Acqua di Parma toiletries in all its rooms. The abbey church with its imposing hearth currently serves as the hotel’s Grand Café and has a walled terrace at the front. Restaurant Nassau, with its view of the Prinsentuin is housed in the former sleeping quarters of Stadtholder Willem Frederik and his wife Albertine Agnes. The renaissance garden dates from 1626 and features a rose garden, a herb garden, two romantic bowers and a monumental sun dial.

Dining in royal surroundings

Restaurant Nassau & Grand Café

Fine dining and lunches are served in Restaurant Nassau, a truly magnificent setting. Dining in royal surroundings with soaring coved ceilings, overlooking the Prinsentuin Garden, is a delightful experience. The restaurant also has a private dining room. Chef Christian de Vries has developed the menu. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are also served in the Grand Café, located in the former 15th century monastery church. The word ‘grand’ is to be taken literally here, as the service, the quality of the coffee, or the atmosphere, they are all equally discerning. The wonderful light-effect, the open and friendly ambiance will without doubt make you feel at home. The pastries, accompanying your afternoon or high tea, are home made. Weather permitting you can enjoy your meals on the Grand Café terrace in the walled courtyard, adjacent to the Martinikerkhof square.
